There is a continuous war between mobile devices. It is not actually a bloody war, wherein one party is trying to annihilate the other. It is more of a battle for the consumers' hearts and minds. At first it was seen as more of a cold war, when manufacturers of laptop computers and cellular phones did not try to cross each other's turf. All of this changed when big players in the industry decided to diversify their product lines. Suddenly laptop producers introduced their own mobile phone and cellular phone manufacturers upgraded their products with features that rival the personal computers. After the dust settled, it turned out that the real war was going to be Android OS vs. iOS.
Strategy of the old dog
Apple is the old dog who is in a vicious fight with a gang of new kids on the block dubbed the Open Handset Alliance. By applying good old military tactics, it seems that Apple Inc. is greatly outnumbered because the opponent consists of more than a dozen companies in the same line of business. Nonetheless, under the command of its visionary CEO, Steve Jobs, Apple managed to undertake tactical maneuvers which enabled the company to capture strategic share of the market. In parade and review-like gatherings, Steve Jobs magnificently introduced Apple's latest offerings. This show of might was seen in the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. However, the powerful ammunition that compensates these sophisticated devices is the iOS. To better understand the soul of Apple products, the important question should be asked. What is iOS?
When Apple entered the smartphone business, it decided to come up with its own mobile operating system. Hence, the iOS originally known as iPhone OS was created for the iPhone and iPod touch. Until now, the latest version of iOS is exclusive for Apple's line of mobile devices which include the Apple TV and iPad. The decision to keep iOS within the Apple territory is limiting but the company still has a highly efficient weapon in its arsenal. This weapon called the App Store fuels the iOS. Software developers fight tooth and nail to get a shot at the App Store. Apple is intent on providing its consumers with a one stop shop on everything they would need for their Apple mobile devices.
There are Apple patrons who consider this strategy a smart move for themselves and the company as well. They let Apple decide what is good for them in making their lives more comfortable. On the other hand, there are consumers who are not content with what Apple is offering. In searching for more freedom they decided to launch iOS jailbreak, which is a highly sophisticated operation of infiltrating the core of the system. Their goal is to override the limitations set by Apple to integrate other applications that they consider useful for them.
Rising up to the challenge
The Open Handset Alliance has a different corporate dogma which led to the development of the Android OS. Instead of developing a mobile operating system for a single product brand, they created a system that is open for other digital products. A testament to this reasoning is the Android Open Source Project which aims to continuously develop the operating system for Android mobile devices. The project also takes care of monitoring the capability of Android devices to run applications created by third party software developers.
